| Humans have given names to approximately
1.5 million organisms on earth. The organisms that have not been named,
however, are said to total several tens of millions. The majority
of such undiscovered organisms inhabit tropical rainforests. These
rich cradles of life are concentrated in such equatorial
regions as the Congo River basin in Africa, Southeast Asian islands,
and the Amazon basin in South America. Tropical rainforests are now
disappearing at a rapid pace. The causes of this phenomenon include
forest clearing necessitated by the exploding population in developing
countries, logging operations for wood export to developed countries,
air pollution, and wars. Tropical rainforests consume an enormous
amount of carbon dioxide, thereby reducing global warming. As many
are aware, their disappearance puts human survival at risk. One distinguished
and environmentally conscious photographer made extended trips to
many parts of the world to compile this book. It provides the real
picture of the precious ecosystem of tropical rainforests, with the
aid of 144 color photos. |
