  by WADA Haruki
March 2002, 210 x 148 mm, 530 pp, JPY6,600
The Korean War continues to contain many puzzles that stir debate, even 50 years after it began. Not confined to one corner of Asia; American, Chinese and Soviet Union participation internationalized its impact. Increasing American-Soviet polarization, the war decisively influenced the formation of the Cold War era. Thus in an overview of 20th century history, the war's importance cannot be overstated.
New materials released after the end of the Cold War have enabled a great leap forward to occur in the level of research on the Korean War. What caused war to break out in the first place? What roles did Stalin, Mao and Kim Il Sung and other leaders play in the process leading to war? This is the first work to attempt to answer the many heretof0re unasked questions related to the war by a one of Japan's leading modern historians. Basing his research on materials only recently made public in Korea, Russia, China and elsewhere, this groundbreaking work describes the entire aspect of the war from a wide viewpoint.
